The Kano State Government has unveiled a ₦300 million support package for 1,500 couples participating in its 2026 mass wedding scheme, combining premarital counselling, business grants and household assistance in an effort to strengthen families and ease the financial pressures of marriage.

Activities for the annual programme began on Thursday with a one-day orientation for intending couples at the Coronation Hall in Kano, where Islamic scholars and professionals delivered lectures on marital responsibilities, conflict resolution, health and legal issues ahead of the wedding ceremonies.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, urged participants to build their marriages on trust, patience, mutual respect and the fear of Allah.

According to a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, the governor described marriage as a sacred institution founded on responsibility, compassion and mutual understanding, saying strong families remain the foundation of a peaceful and prosperous society.

He advised the intending couples to remain faithful to one another, resolve disagreements through dialogue and fulfil their respective rights and responsibilities as spouses.

Alongside the counselling programme, the state government approved ₦300 million to cover dowries and provide business start-up grants for the 1,500 brides in the scheme.

Under the arrangement, each bride will receive ₦200,000, covering both her dowry and capital to establish a small business, while additional household items including a bed, mattress, wardrobe, dressing mirror, blankets, bed sheets and a centre rug, will also be provided.

Each groom is expected to receive 10 yards of Guinea brocade, a cap, a bag of rice and a jerrycan of cooking oil as part of the government’s support package for newly married couples.

The orientation featured lectures by Islamic scholars and professionals on marriage, family responsibilities and conflict resolution, including presentations by Sheikh Ali Aliyu Abubakar, Professor Ibrahim Mu’azzam Mai Bushira and Sheikh Muhammad Nur Arzai.

Other speakers included Barrister Habibu Dan Almajiri, Sheikh Ibrahim Shehi Shehi Mai Hula, Dr. Zahara’u Muhammad Umar and Dr. Khadija Sagir Suleiman.

According to the state government, the programme will continue until Sunday, with marriage solemnisation ceremonies scheduled for Friday at the Central Jumu’ah Mosque in Kano and simultaneously across the headquarters of the state’s 44 local government areas.

The programme will culminate in a reception at the Government House Open Arena, where newly married couples will receive household items and other support packages as Kano concludes one of Nigeria’s largest state-backed mass wedding initiatives.
