PHOTO HIGHLIGHTS: Nigerian Pilgrims Arrive at Arafat for Hajj Rites

Thousands of Nigerian pilgrims joined millions of Muslims on the Plain of Arafat today for the spiritual climax of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, gathering in prayer and reflection at the site regarded as the heart of the Islamic rite.

Under intense desert heat in Saudi Arabia, pilgrims from across Nigeria began arriving at Arafat in the early hours of the day after departing Mina, as Saudi authorities coordinated one of the largest annual religious movements in the world.

The Day of Arafat, observed on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, is considered the most significant stage of Hajj. Muslims believe it was at Arafat that the Prophet Muhammad delivered his Farewell Sermon more than 1,400 years ago, calling for justice, equality and the sanctity of human life.

For pilgrims, standing at Arafat known as Wuquf, represents the spiritual peak of the pilgrimage, where worshippers spend hours in supplication, repentance and prayer from noon until sunset. Islamic tradition holds that sincere prayers offered on the plains are among the most accepted.

Nigerian pilgrims, many of whom had waited years for the journey, were photographed arriving at the Plain of Arafat as temperatures soared across the holy sites during the most significant stage of the Hajj pilgrimage.

Saudi authorities deployed extensive cooling systems, medical teams and crowd-control operations across Arafat to manage the movement of millions of pilgrims converging on the sacred plain.

Following sunset, pilgrims are expected to proceed to Muzdalifah, where they will spend the night in open worship and collect pebbles for the symbolic stoning ritual at Jamarat.

This year’s Hajj has drawn Muslims from across the world amid heightened logistical and security preparations by Saudi authorities, with officials emphasising heat protection measures after recent years saw deadly temperatures during pilgrimage season.
