A Saudi Islamic education institution founded more than six decades ago has adopted virtual classrooms, educational platforms and e-learning technologies to enhance teaching and learning.

The Holy Mosque Institute in Makkah, together with its branch at the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, provides instruction in Islamic sciences for intermediate and secondary students. It was established in 1385 AH (1965) by order of King Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. A higher education section, inaugurated in 1423 AH to focus on religious and linguistic specialisations, was later developed into the Holy Mosque College in 1436 AH (2015), which teaches at bachelor’s level.

The move online began several years ago. In July 2019 the institute signed an agreement with Classera to set up a distance learning system, allowing students to register for programmes and attend them through interactive live broadcasts.

In March 2020, the Saudi Press Agency reported, the institute activated a distance-learning platform with live virtual classes and recorded lessons, on the direction of the General President for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque, Sheikh Abdulrahman al-Sudais, so that lessons could continue after coronavirus precautions were introduced. An online application link followed in June 2021.

The General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque continues to support the institute’s educational mission within the precincts of the Two Holy Mosques, linking the longstanding tradition of Islamic learning there with contemporary teaching methods.
