Harvard Chaplains Condemn Post on Eid Event

Say online criticism of Muslim celebration is harmful and fuels Islamophobia

Harvard University Muslim chaplains have strongly condemned a social media post by the Harvard Republican Club that criticized an Eid al-Fitr celebration held on campus, describing it as offensive and harmful to Muslim students.

The chaplains said the post, which targeted an event organised by the Harvard Islamic Society, could increase fear, isolation, and discomfort among Muslim students on campus.

They added that such comments against religious celebrations create division and go against the values of respect and peaceful coexistence in a university environment.

The chaplains also urged students and organisations to choose dialogue and understanding instead of hate or discrimination, saying respect for religious differences is important in a diverse campus community.

The controversy began after the Harvard Republican Club posted complaints about the Eid gathering, including claims that it disrupted study time and that non-students attended the event. The post has remained online and sparked criticism.

Leaders of the Harvard Islamic Society rejected the claims, saying the information shared in the post was false and misleading. They also defended the event as a peaceful religious celebration.

University officials confirmed that a complaint has been filed and is under review to check whether any campus rules were violated.

The chaplains said they have received support from many religious leaders on campus and stressed that anti-Muslim bias and discrimination should be addressed quickly to protect religious freedom.
