The mosque at Mogadishu Cantonment used by Muslim soldiers and their families has reopened after a week-long closure, prompting the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) to commend the Nigerian Army Headquarters and the cantonment commandant.

MURIC Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, October 25, 2026, saying the mosque was reopened on Tuesday, October 20.

According to Akintola, the mosque had been closed since Monday, October 12, before MURIC appealed to the Army Headquarters and cantonment authorities to reopen it for daily prayers by resident Muslim soldiers and their families.

“The daily prayers mosque inside Mogadishu Cantonment used by Muslim soldiers and their families who reside in the military blocks has been opened,” Akintola said.

He said the reopening on the same day MURIC publicly raised the issue brought relief to the organisation after what he described as a week of distress.

Akintola commended the Nigerian Army for what he described as professionalism and respect for the rule of law, saying MURIC welcomed the decision to reopen the mosque.

He said the development could strengthen goodwill between Muslims and the military, while urging Muslims across the country to cooperate with military personnel and other security agencies.

“We therefore appeal to Muslims throughout the country to give full cooperation to military personnel and other security agencies at all times,” he said.

MURIC had previously appealed to Army Headquarters and the cantonment authorities to explain the reason for the mosque’s closure and called for its reopening.
