BREAKING NEWS: Iran reopens Strait of Hormuz after Lebanon ceasefire

Move follows Lebanon ceasefire as Tehran sets conditions on key global shipping route amid contested accounts of wider diplomatic deal

Iran has announced the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping, but under what it describes as strict operational conditions, following the implementation of a ceasefire in Lebanon.

The decision was confirmed by Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, who said commercial vessels would now be permitted to pass through the waterway under coordinated routes issued by Iranian maritime authorities.

However, Iranian officials and state-linked media said the reopening does not amount to a full lifting of restrictions. They indicated that vessels may still be required to comply with Iranian routing instructions, with military ships excluded and access potentially limited for vessels linked to states Tehran considers hostile.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical shipping corridors, carrying a significant proportion of global oil supplies. It has been at the centre of heightened tensions since the escalation of regional conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel earlier this year.

Iran had previously imposed restrictions on shipping it said was connected to adversaries, framing the move as a security response during ongoing hostilities. The latest announcement appears to mark a shift in posture, though the scope of that shift remains unclear.

The reopening comes after a ceasefire in Lebanon came into effect at midnight, following weeks of intensified fighting. US President Donald Trump confirmed the truce in a White House address, though details of the broader arrangements remain contested.

Iranian officials have linked developments on maritime access to wider diplomatic understandings, some of which were discussed in negotiations facilitated in Islamabad. However, those talks reportedly ended without agreement on key issues.

Earlier rounds of US-Iran discussions collapsed amid disagreements over nuclear guarantees, sanctions relief and regional security arrangements, according to officials involved.

Iranian statements have presented the reopening of Hormuz as part of a broader strategic outcome, but Western officials have not publicly confirmed any link between the ceasefire and changes to maritime policy.

Analysts say the situation remains fluid, with the extent of Iran’s control over shipping routes and the durability of the ceasefire both still uncertain.

For now, the announcement signals a partial easing of maritime tensions, but not necessarily a return to unrestricted passage through one of the world’s most strategically sensitive waterways.
