US retrieves second airman after jet downed in Iran
Daring extraction exposes cracks in Washington’s claims of control as Iran challenges US forces in an escalating conflict.

U.S. special forces have rescued the second crew member of an F-15 fighter jet shot down over Iran, according to American officials, in a high-risk operation that underscores the deepening consequences of Washington’s military campaign.
The rescued officer, identified as a weapons systems operator, was reportedly injured after ejecting from the aircraft but managed to evade capture for more than a day in mountainous terrain before being located.
U.S. officials said both crew members from the downed jet have now been extracted following separate rescue missions inside Iranian territory.
The incident has raised serious questions about repeated claims by Donald Trump and senior officials that the United States maintains uncontested control of the skies, as Iranian forces continue to challenge American aircraft.
Officials reported that they conducted the initial rescue operation for the pilot within hours of the jet’s downing. During that mission, Iranian fire struck a U.S. UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, injuring crew members, though it remained operational.
The second rescue operation proved more complex, taking over 24 hours as both U.S. forces and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps raced to locate the missing officer.
U.S. intelligence agencies reportedly conducted a deception campaign within Iran, spreading false information to mislead local forces while using advanced surveillance capabilities to pinpoint the officer’s location.
The White House directly ordered the final extraction after intelligence agencies shared precise coordinates with military command, according to officials. Senior leadership, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, monitored the operation.
President Trump later described the mission as “one of the most daring” in U.S. military history, while downplaying the broader implications of the aircraft loss.
Observers, however, argue the incident exposes the growing vulnerability of U.S. forces operating deep inside Iranian territory as part of a widening war increasingly shaped by aggressive policies from Washington under Israeli pressure.
The downing of the F-15, alongside reports of an additional U.S. A-10 aircraft brought down in the region, has further challenged official narratives of overwhelming American superiority. Analysts say these developments signal a more contested battlespace than U.S. leaders have publicly acknowledged.
The episode comes as diplomatic efforts remain stalled, with Washington continuing to issue threats of further escalation, including potential strikes on critical infrastructure. Observers warn that such rhetoric and actions risk intensifying an already volatile conflict with far-reaching consequences across the region.
