Iran Says It Repelled US Rescue Operation in Isfahan

Conflicting accounts emerge as Iran claims downing of US aircraft while US insists pilot was recovered, underscoring deepening information war alongside escalating conflict

Iran has claimed it thwarted a United States rescue mission in the central city of Isfahan, destroying multiple aircraft in what it described as a failed attempt to retrieve the pilot of a downed American fighter jet, a version of events directly disputed by Washington.

According to Lieutenant-Colonel Ebrahim Zolfaqari, spokesman for Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, Iranian forces intercepted what he described as a covert US operation at an abandoned airstrip. He said two C-130 transport aircraft and two Black Hawk helicopters were destroyed during the encounter.

“The so-called rescue operation… was brought to a complete failure by the timely presence of the Iranian armed forces,” he said in remarks carried by Iranian state media.

The account sharply contrasts with a statement by US President Donald Trump, who said American forces had successfully recovered the pilot, presenting the mission as effective and ongoing.

The competing narratives underline a broader struggle for control of the story as much as the battlefield itself. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) rejected Washington’s version outright, saying US aerial assets entering Iranian airspace had been destroyed in a coordinated response involving multiple branches of the armed forces.

Iranian officials framed the incident as a decisive defensive success, while US messaging has sought to maintain an image of operational control, a divergence analysts say reflects both strategic signalling and domestic political considerations.

Iranian statements drew comparisons with Operation Eagle Claw, the failed American attempt to rescue hostages in 1980 that ended in disaster in the Iranian desert. The reference appears intended to reinforce a narrative of repeated US failure on Iranian soil.

Tehran also reported that additional aerial targets, including an MQ-9 drone and a Hermes-900 unmanned system, were shot down over Isfahan province, although these claims have not been independently verified.

The incident comes amid a widening conflict triggered by US and Israeli strikes on Iranian military infrastructure. Since then, Iran has launched repeated missile and drone attacks targeting Israeli positions and US-linked facilities across the region.

Independent verification of battlefield claims remains limited, with both sides issuing statements that serve strategic and political objectives. What is clear, however, is that the confrontation is intensifying, not only in military terms, but in the competing narratives shaping global perception of the war.
