After 40 days of conflict, US suspends attacks as Iran secures terms, Pakistan mediates ceasefire

In a dramatic turn of events, President Donald Trump announced a two-week suspension of American attacks on Iran, a decision widely framed by Pakistani media as the ultimate capitulation to Tehran. The announcement, made on Trump’s Truth Social platform, came with a stipulation: Iran must reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a lifeline for global oil transport.

Pakistani news networks immediately characterized the move as a concession, highlighting that the US and its Israeli ally had been forced to yield to Tehran’s demands. Suno TV described the decision as recognition of Iran’s pivotal role in West Asia and control over the Strait of Hormuz. 92 News cited political and defense analysts asserting that all of Trump’s assumptions about Iran had proved flawed.

Iran, for its part, celebrated what it termed a “historic and crushing defeat” of the US and Israeli forces after 40 days of conflict. The Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) declared that Washington “saw no way forward but to submit to the will of the great nation of Iran and the honorable Axis of Resistance.” The statement outlined a 10-point Iranian proposal, including a permanent ceasefire, the lifting of sanctions, and the withdrawal of US combat forces from the region.

Samaa News reported that the truce marked a victory for Iran and forced the Israeli regime to retreat. The Iranian government credited its upper hand to the solidarity between the people, the Islamic establishment, and the Armed Forces, which withstood 99 waves of retaliatory strikes targeting strategic American and Israeli positions.

The ceasefire also followed Tehran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz to adversary vessels, a move that reverberated through global energy and commodity markets. In a statement, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, speaking on behalf of the SNSC, confirmed that Iran would halt defensive operations if unprovoked attacks ceased and thanked Pakistan for its mediation efforts.

Pakistan’s role was widely acknowledged as pivotal in de-escalating hostilities. Islamabad brokered dialogue between Tehran and Washington, allowing both sides to step back from the brink after weeks of high-intensity conflict. Analysts note that the ceasefire may redefine the strategic balance in the Gulf region, with Iran asserting its authority over one of the world’s most sensitive maritime chokepoints.

The announcement of a truce, following more than five weeks of hostilities, is being interpreted by regional experts as a diplomatic and strategic victory for Iran, demonstrating the limitations of American coercive power and the resilience of the Islamic Republic’s military and political institutions.
