The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has congratulated his predecessor, Prof. Emeritus Is-haq Olanrewaju Oloyede, on his turbaning as Kuliyan Sokoto by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III.
The turbaning ceremony took place on Sunday, November 1, at the Sultan’s Palace in Sokoto, as the monarch marked 20 years on the throne.
Egbewole, in a statement issued by the university’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, also congratulated the Sultan on the milestone and thanked him for finding Oloyede worthy of the traditional title.
Oloyede served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin from 2007 to 2012. He is also the immediate past Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and Secretary-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA).
Describing the conferment as a recognition of Oloyede’s record of public service, Egbewole called it “a well-deserved honour to a rare breed public servant, a detribalised Nigerian bridge builder, and an incorruptible statesman.”
He said the title recognised Oloyede’s contributions to educational development, service excellence, community service and humanitarian work.
The Vice-Chancellor further described the professor of Islamic jurisprudence as “a veritable symbol of renewed hope for national rebirth.”
Wishing Oloyede a long and fruitful tenure in his new traditional assignment, Egbewole said the honour showed that “Nigeria is not done with the multi-tasking former JAMB boss yet.”
Egbewole also felicitated the Sultan on his 20th anniversary on the throne, describing his reign as one that has symbolised societal peace, religious harmony and national development.
He wished the Sultan, who is also the Sarkin Musulmi and President-General of the NSCIA, long life, continued good health and a more fulfilling reign.
