The Holy Quran argues from the tangible to the intangible. It highlights numerous natural phenomena and draws moral and spiritual lessons from them. The Glorious Quran aims to unify the mundane with the spiritual, providing a holistic understanding. Let us focus on a few verses from Surah Waqiah:
Reflect on the water that you drink. Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? If We so pleased, We could make it bitter. Then, why are you not grateful? Reflect on the fire that you kindle. Is it you who produce the tree from which you take the wood, or do We? We have made it a reminder and a provision for voyagers. So glorify the name of thy Lord, the Great. (Al Quran 56:68- 74)
Often, scientists discover the mechanisms of a particular natural phenomenon and want to write off the Designer and the Creator behind the scenes. However, in these verses, Allah poses a poignant question: it is not enough to learn the mechanism; one must also ponder if humans themselves created this elaborate system, with numerous details, which satisfy all our physical needs? If not they, then who is the author of this awe-inspiring universe?
The verses quoted as an epigraph concisely describe more than one natural phenomenon that was discovered only centuries after the revelation of the Quran.
Clouds carry varying amounts of moisture, primarily depending on their type, formation process, and environmental conditions. The moisture content within a cloud is typically measured as liquid water content (LWC), representing the mass of liquid water per unit volume of air. This LWC varies significantly among different cloud types. For instance, cumulus clouds, which are fluffy and often associated with fair weather, can have an LWC ranging from 0.2 to 1.0 grams per cubic meter. In contrast, cumulonimbus clouds, known for their towering structure and potential to produce severe weather, may exhibit LWC values between 1.0 and 3.0 grams per cubic meter.
Several factors influence the moisture content of clouds:
- Temperature and Humidity: Higher temperatures and humidity levels near the Earth’s surface can lead to greater moisture availability, potentially resulting in clouds with higher LWC.
- Altitude: Clouds at higher altitudes, such as cirrus clouds, often contain ice crystals instead of liquid water droplets, affecting their overall moisture content.
- Geographical Location: Clouds over oceans and land may contain similar amounts of water on average, but the characteristics of the droplets can differ. For example, low-level clouds over oceans are composed of fewer but larger droplets compared to those over land.
Understanding these variations is crucial for meteorology, as the moisture content of clouds plays a significant role in weather patterns and precipitation formation.
The systematic classification of clouds began in the early 19th century. In 1802, British pharmacist and amateur meteorologist Luke Howard introduced a nomenclature system that categorized clouds into three primary types:
- Cirrus: Wispy, hair-like clouds.
- Cumulus: Heaped, fluffy clouds.
- Stratus: Layered, sheet-like clouds.
Howard’s system also included combinations like cirrostratus and cirrocumulus to describe transitional forms. This classification was presented in his essay “On the Modification of Clouds,” delivered to the Askesian Society in December 1802 and published in 1803.
Around the same time, in 1802, French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck proposed a different cloud classification system. However, Lamarck’s system, which used descriptive French terms, did not gain widespread acceptance, partly because it lacked the universal applicability of Howard’s Latin-based nomenclature.
The understanding of clouds and their varying water content has evolved since these initial classifications. While early systems focused on visual characteristics, modern meteorology examines the microphysical properties of clouds, including their water and ice content, to better understand their formation and impact on weather patterns. This progression highlights the ongoing development in the study of clouds from simple visual classification to detailed physical analysis.
With this very basic scientific history and information about clouds let us examine some of the verses in the Glorious Quran, where clouds are mentioned:
Introduction to Quranic Coverage of Clouds
The Quran contains vivid descriptions of natural phenomena that, when read through the lens of modern science, show striking parallels with contemporary meteorology and oceanography. In particular, several verses describe the formation of clouds, precipitation, lightning, and even the conditions in the depths of the ocean with imagery that aligns closely with what we understand today. Quran 2:164 – Signs in Rain, Wind, and Clouds
Verse 2:164 highlights the “water which God sends down from the sky” to revive dead earth, and mentions the “shifting of the winds and the clouds subjugated between the sky and the earth” as signs for people of understanding. In scientific terms, this is a concise summary of the hydrologic cycle and the role of atmospheric dynamics in distributing water. Modern meteorology confirms that water evaporated from the oceans is carried through the atmosphere by winds and later falls as life-giving rain on land. The mention of “shifting winds” recognizes the importance of wind patterns in weather. Scientifically, wind is the engine that moves moist air masses around the globe, forming and steering clouds. Prevailing winds and pressure systems drive moisture from ocean to land, leading to precipitation far from the water’s source. The verse also speaks of “clouds held between the sky and earth,” an allusion to how clouds seem suspended in the atmosphere. We now know clouds are composed of tiny water droplets or ice crystals light enough to be lifted by air currents. It is noteworthy that a single cloud can carry an immense amount of water—on the order of hundreds of thousands of kilograms—yet remain aloft. Quran 13:12 – Lightning and Heavy Clouds

The upper part of a thundercloud becomes positively charged while the middle/lower part becomes negatively charged due to these interactions. The verse paints a layered picture of a deep sea: profound darkness in the depths, multiple sets of waves (one atop another), and clouds above contributing to the darkness. Each element of this description corresponds intriguingly to scientific realities of the ocean and atmosphere.
First, consider the “darkness in a deep ocean.” Modern oceanography confirms that beyond a certain depth, sunlight cannot penetrate the water, resulting in perpetual darkness. The upper layer of the ocean (called the euphotic or sunlight zone) usually extends down to about 200 meters, after which light intensity drops sharply. By roughly 1000 meters depth (the start of the aphotic zone), no sunlight reaches the water at all. It is indeed so dark in the deep ocean that a human would not see their hand in front of their face without artificial light – exactly as the verse describes. The Quran’s assertion of total darkness in deep seas is scientifically accurate: below about 1000 m, the ocean is in midnight darkness 24 hours a day. This fact was unknown to surface dwellers in ancient times, as humans cannot dive unaided to anywhere near those depths, and submarines or deep-sea probes came millennia later. Next, the verse speaks of “waves upon waves” covering the deep sea. This can be interpreted as two layers of waves – an idea that correlates with the modern discovery of internal waves within the ocean. We are all familiar with surface waves (the waves one sees on the ocean’s surface). However, oceanographers have found that there are also internal waves that occur at the boundaries between layers of water with different densities (for example, where a layer of warmer, lighter water lies above colder, denser water). These internal waves behave much like surface waves but occur underwater, invisible to someone above, as they oscillate within the ocean’s depths. Scientists describe internal waves as “occurring on density interfaces between layers of different densities” – effectively waves below the surface. The Quran’s phrase “waves, upon which are waves” is a remarkably apt description of this phenomenon: it suggests an unseen wave under the sea (the first wave) topped by a visible wave (the second). Internal waves were only recognized by scientists in the last century or two, through specialized instruments and satellite imagery. They can reach towering heights (even 100+ meters high in some cases) yet do not break the surface dramatically – hence “waves beneath waves” create subsurface turbulence while the surface may just show a slight swell. Additionally, the surface waves themselves contribute to darkness by stirring the water and increasing light attenuation, and the verse layering them under clouds emphasizes compounded darkness.
Finally, “over which are clouds” completes the picture. Clouds, when present above the ocean, block sunlight from reaching the water. On a cloudy or stormy day, the ocean below is even darker than on a clear day. So we have: cloud cover blocking light from above, surface waves scattering what light remains, and internal waves in the deep contributing to an overall effect of “darkness upon darkness.” In a literal scientific sense, each of these layers can be seen as an additional barrier to light. It’s as if the verse enumerates the main contributors to light attenuation in the ocean: clouds (reducing incoming sunlight), surface waves (reflecting and refracting light), and depth with internal stratification (preventing light from reaching deep layers). The result is a level of darkness where vision is nearly impossible – exactly as stated: “if one stretches out his hand, he can hardly see it.” Notably, marine scientists have documented that even many deep-sea creatures have lost functional eyes or rely on bioluminescence because sunlight does not reach their habitat.
What’s academically fascinating is that an analogy in a 7th-century text aligns with details of deep-sea physics that no one could directly observe at the time. The verse’s reference to multiple wave layers anticipates the modern concept of internal waves, and its emphasis on total darkness in deep water is consistent with measurements of light penetration. From a scientific perspective, 24:40 provides an accurate depiction of the ocean’s stratified darkness. While used as a metaphor in context, the choice of this particular natural analogy suggests an author deeply familiar with the realities of the sea – realities confirmed only by advanced science much later. It is a powerful example of Quranic language coinciding with scientific truth.

Quran 24:43 – Formation of Rain Clouds and Hail
Verse 24:43 observes: “Do you not see that God drives the clouds, then joins them together, then makes them into a stack, and you see the rain emerge from within it? And He sends down from the sky mountains [of clouds] containing hail, and He strikes with it whom He wills… The flash of its lightning nearly takes away the sight.” This verse provides a remarkably detailed step-by-step description of rainstorm development, closely paralleling the modern scientific understanding of how cumulonimbus (thunderstorm) clouds form and produce precipitation. Let’s break down the sequence given and compare it with meteorological science:
- “God drives the clouds” – The process often begins with wind (air currents) pushing small cloud fragments or moist air together. In meteorological terms, low-level winds transport patches of cumulus clouds or humid air to a convergence zone. This is the initial gathering stage where isolated cloud puffs start moving towards each other under the influence of the wind.
- “then joins them together” – As those clouds meet, they merge into a larger cloud mass. Small cumulus clouds coalesce to form a growing cloud cluster. Modern time-lapse satellite imagery indeed shows small cloud cells fusing into bigger clouds when pushed by converging winds. By joining, they create a cumulonimbus “tower” or a multi-cell cluster if conditions allow. The verse’s terminology of stacking suggests the cloud increasing in thickness and height, which is exactly what happens: the once small clouds, now united, form a towering cumulonimbus with a high altitude. The vertical growth is critical because higher altitudes are colder – up there, the abundant moisture in the cloud begins to condense into large droplets and freeze into ice. - “and you see the rain emerge from within it” – Once the cloud has grown and moisture has accumulated, precipitation occurs. Scientifically, rain (and hail) falls when the droplets or ice particles in the cloud become too heavy for the updrafts to hold aloft. They then fall to earth as rain. The verse describes this outcome exactly at the right stage in the sequence: after the cloud has formed and stacked up, rain comes forth. Anyone observing a thundercloud would see sudden downpours start under the dark heap of the cloud, aligning with “rain emerges from its midst.”
- “sends down from the sky mountains [of clouds] containing hail” – This phrase draws attention to hailstones and the massive size of storm clouds. Cumulonimbus clouds often look like mountain ranges from the ground, and indeed they often span several kilometers in height and breadth. Inside these “cloud mountains,” strong cyclic updrafts can create hail: pellets of ice that grow as they are repeatedly lofted and coated with water in the cold upper cloud before falling. Eventually, hail “comes down” along with rain when the updrafts can no longer support it. - “The flash of its lightning nearly takes away the sight” – In the final part, the verse mentions the lightning associated with these storm clouds. Quran 30:48 – Wind-Driven Clouds and Distributed Rain
Verse 30:48 states: “Allah is He who sends the winds, and they raise the clouds; then He spreads them along the sky as He wills, and breaks them into fragments, so you see the rain come forth from within them…” This verse reiterates some of the themes from 7:57 and 24:43, emphasizing the role of wind in cloud formation and distribution. However, it adds further insight by mentioning how clouds are spread out and fragmented in the sky, resulting in rain falling from specific cloud patches.
The opening “sends the winds, and they raise the clouds” points again to wind-driven evaporation and convection. Winds carry warm, moisture-laden air upward or into convergence zones, causing the air to cool and condense into clouds. In modern terms, wind provides the lifting mechanism needed for cloud formation – whether it’s a sea breeze lifting air, or a frontal boundary forcing air upwards, or mountain slopes causing orographic lifting. The Quranic phrasing suggests that without wind, clouds would not “rise” – a fact we affirm in meteorology: air must rise and cool for clouds (condensed water) to appear, and winds often supply that vertical motion.
Next, “He spreads them along the sky as He wills” describes how clouds can start to cover large expanses. Scientifically, once clouds form, upper-level winds can carry them over broad areas. We see this when cloud decks (like stratiform clouds) stretch across a horizon or when a cluster of storm clouds spreads out into an anvil shape that covers a region. The verse highlights that the distribution of clouds across the sky is not random happenstance but follows certain patterns (“as He wills” in theological terms, which one might interpret scientifically as following the laws of physics God set in place).
