Prof Abdullahi’s resignation reflects true Leadership – Oyebanji
Dr Oyebanji says former NAHCON boss’s exit reflects humility, faith and sacrifice for institutional stability

Dr. S.T. Oyebanji of the University of Abuja has paid glowing tribute to Prof. Abdullahi Saleh Usman following his resignation as chairman and chief executive officer of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, describing the decision as a reflection of humility, faith and commitment to institutional stability.
In a statement dated Feb. 9 and personally signed, Dr Oyebanji described the former Chairman as more than a public official, referring to him as a father, mentor, adviser and brother whose leadership transcended office and title.
“Your decision to humbly resign reflects the depth of your character and your commitment to peace, institutional stability, and the greater good of the Commission and the nation,” Oyebanji said, adding that true leadership is sometimes demonstrated through sacrifice rather than the exercise of power.
The former Chairman announced his resignation effective Feb. 9, citing personal reasons and submitting his decision formally to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in accordance with the NAHCON Act.
Oyebanji said Usman’s tenure was marked by sustained challenges, but noted that he navigated pressure with patience, resilience and calmness, qualities he described as moral strengths rather than mere leadership traits.
“You stood firm with wisdom, kindness, tolerance and genuine love for people,” he said. “These were not just leadership traits; they were moral strengths that defined your style of service.”
He said he personally learned from Usman’s conduct under criticism and responsibility, noting that his approach reinforced the principle that leadership is a trust from Allah and service to humanity.
Oyebanji also offered prayers for him as he begins a new phase of life, asking Allah to grant him long life, good health and continued elevation in both worldly affairs and the hereafter.
“May every difficulty you faced become a source of reward and elevation,” he said, praying for peace, fulfillment and divine favor in Usman’s future endeavors.
The tribute concluded with a reaffirmation of loyalty and respect, with Oyebanji urging the former Chairman to continue serving as a source of guidance and inspiration beyond public office.
“Your impact goes beyond offices and titles,” he said. “It lives in the people you shaped.”
