Nigeria has lost one of its most distinguished business icons and elder statesmen, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata, who passed away at the age of 94. Widely revered for his profound impact on commerce, Islamic finance, and humanitarian efforts, his passing marks the end of a chapter in the country’s history of principled entrepreneurship and selfless giving.
The news of his death was confirmed on Saturday morning by his Principal Private Secretary, Mustapha Abdullahi Junaid, in a heartfelt statement.
“Innalillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of our beloved father, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata. May Allah grant him Jannatul Firdaus and forgive his shortcomings. The Janazah details will be shared later, insha Allah,” the statement read.
A scion of the legendary Dantata family of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Dantata was the founder of Express Petroleum & Gas Company Limited and a pioneering force behind Jaiz Bank, Nigeria’s first Islamic non-interest financial institution. His business career was marked not only by visionary investments but also by deep-rooted Islamic values and a commitment to uplifting communities.
Known as a mentor to many, including Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Dantata was often described as a moral compass in Nigeria’s corporate landscape, someone who combined faith, modesty, and strategy to build lasting legacies.
In a significant and rare honour, the government of Saudi Arabia has approved the burial of Alhaji Aminu Dantata in the holy city of Madina, following the transportation of his remains from Abu Dhabi. Sources indicate that final rites will be observed in line with Islamic principles at a date to be announced by the family.
This development has further elevated the emotion surrounding his passing, as friends, admirers, and associates regard the Madina burial as a spiritual privilege befitting a man who lived a life of integrity and devotion.
Beyond business, Alhaji Dantata was a generous philanthropist. His contributions to education, health care, Islamic propagation, and support for the needy remain etched in the memory of communities across Nigeria and beyond. Over the years, he quietly financed the construction of mosques, supported countless students with scholarships, and responded swiftly to humanitarian crises all without fanfare.
