Sheikh Yunus Akanbi Kehinde remembered as scholar and spiritual guide as Muslim community mourns national religious figure

The National Chief Imam of the Nawair-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Sheikh Yunus Akanbi Kehinde, has died and been laid to rest, according to his family and the leadership of the society.

In a statement signed by the Ogun Zone Chairman, Alhaji Monsuru Olaleye Agbaje, and the Public Relations Officer, Owolabi Q. O., the organisation confirmed that the cleric “returned to his Lord in the midnight hours,” describing his death as a major loss to the community.

In the official announcement, the group said: “It is with deep shock, heavy hearts, and total submission to the will of Allah that we announce the passing of our revered father, scholar, and spiritual guide, Sheikh Yunus Akanbi Kehinde, the National Chief Imam of Nawair-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, who returned to his Lord in the midnight hours.”

He was described as a scholar, spiritual guide, and long-serving religious leader whose work shaped the lives of many within the organisation and beyond.

According to the notice of Janazah issued by the family, the burial took place on Monday, 13 April 2026, at his residence in Camp. Members of the society confirmed that the funeral proceedings were carried out in line with Islamic tradition of prompt burial.

Sheikh Kehinde served as National Chief Imam of the Nawair-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, where he was widely regarded as a custodian of religious teaching and community guidance.

Leaders within the organisation said he played a central role in nurturing students, strengthening religious education, and supporting the spiritual development of members over several decades.

Tributes have continued across the Muslim community, with many describing him as a father figure whose influence extended beyond formal teaching into personal mentorship and guidance.

Prayers have been offered for his forgiveness and eternal rest, with community members extending condolences to his family and the wider society.
