The Kebbi State Police Command has detained a 29-year-old man, Abubakar Musa, over an alleged attempt to use a copy of the Qur’an and other items in a ritual intended to influence a woman’s relationship with her husband.
Musa, from Rafin Mose Village in Zuru Local Government Area, was arrested in connection with allegations including criminal conspiracy, abuse of religious books, use of spells and hypnosis, and conduct capable of causing public disturbance.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Bashir Usman, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, saying the incident occurred around 7pm on August 9, 2026, in the Zango area of Zuru.
Usman said preliminary findings indicated that Musa allegedly worked with two other men, identified as Rabi’u Tela, husband of Zarau Hassan, and Hamza Zango, who are currently at large.
According to the police, the suspects allegedly dug a hole inside Zarau Hassan’s room and placed a copy of the Qur’an in it alongside semen, white and red kolanuts, underwear, dead animals and other items described as fetish materials.
The police said the alleged act was intended to make Hassan more submissive to her husband.
The command added that the circumstances surrounding the incident could have triggered unrest among Muslims in the community.
Police efforts are ongoing to locate and arrest the two suspects still at large, while Musa remains in custody pending completion of the investigation.
The command said he would be taken to court after the investigation is concluded.
The Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, CP Umar M. Hadejia, condemned the alleged incident and said the command would take lawful action against activities capable of threatening religious harmony, public order and peaceful coexistence.
The police also urged residents to report suspicious activities promptly, assuring members of the public that information provided would be treated confidentially.
