Malaysia to Collect 150,000 Flood-Damaged Al-Quran for Proper Disposal

The Malaysian Home Ministry is set to collect 150,000 damaged copies of the Al-Quran from flood-affected states, including Kelantan, Terengganu, and Kedah, for proper disposal in accordance with Islamic law.

Nik Yusaimi Yussof, the Secretary of the Enforcement and Control Division, reported that 55,000 damaged copies have already been gathered. These will be handled with the utmost respect, following Islamic traditions for their disposal.

This initiative is part of the Jom Exchange Al-Quran (JEQ) programme, which began on December 4. It is a collaboration between the Kelantan Islamic Affairs Department (JAHEAIK), the State Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIK), and local authorities. The programme aims to run through the duration of the Northeast Monsoon, and collection centres have been set up in flood-hit areas such as Tumpat, Pasir Puteh, and Bachok, allowing the public to participate in the initiative.

Nik Yusaimi shared that, as of now, 25,000 damaged Al-Quran have been collected in Kelantan alone. The damaged copies are being disposed of through Islamic-approved methods, including drying the pages and converting them to ash or removing the ink for recycling.

In return, affected communities will receive new copies of the Al-Quran, certified by the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN), free of charge. However, he urged the public to avoid improper disposal practices, such as sending damaged copies to recycling centres, and to cooperate with the authorities to ensure that the Al-Quran is treated with the reverence it deserves.
