Iran Supreme Leader Pardons Over 2,000 Prisoners for Eid al-Ghadir

Describes the decision as part of a tradition of granting clemency during major religious occasions as an act of mercy and humanitarian relief

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, has approved the release, sentence reduction, or commutation of more than 2,000 prisoners ahead of Eid al-Ghadir.

The decision followed a formal request from the head of the judiciary, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, and was confirmed in an official statement.

Authorities said the move includes different forms of clemency, such as pardons and reduced jail terms for selected inmates.

They explained that the gesture is part of a tradition linked to major religious occasions, where mercy is extended to prisoners as a form of humanitarian relief.

However, officials clarified that individuals convicted of espionage, security-related offences, and crimes against national security are not included in the pardon.
