Dragged on Their Faces (Golden Words of Allah Episode 64)
That Day faces will be bright, laughing and rejoicing at good news. And that Day other faces will be covered with dust, enveloped in darkness.” (Qur’an 80:38/41)

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. All perfect praise is due to Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, the Lord of the Worlds. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah, and Muhammad (pbuh), is His slave and final Messenger.
Introduction
Among the terrifying scenes described in the Qur’an and Sunnah is the fate of those who are dragged on their faces or by chains into the Hellfire on the Day of Judgment. It is a real punishment prepared for those who were arrogant in this duniya, mocked Allah’s revelations, and turned away from His guidance. Their humiliation on that Day will be complete, just as they lowered themselves to sin in this world, they will be dragged low in the next.
Allah says: “Indeed, those who deny Our verses and are arrogant toward them, the gates of Heaven will not be opened for them, nor will they enter Paradise until a camel enters into the eye of a needle. And thus do We recompense the criminals. They will have from Hell a bed and over them coverings [of fire]. And thus do We recompense the wrongdoers.” (Qur’an 7:40/41)
In another verse, Allah says: “On the Day they will be dragged into the Fire on their faces [it will be said], ‘Taste the touch of Hell.’”(Qur’an 54:48)
Allah also describes their restraint with shackles: “Indeed, We have prepared for the disbelievers chains and shackles and a blaze.” (Qur’an 76:4)
And: “When shackles are around their necks and chains; they will be dragged into boiling water; then in the Fire they will be filled with flame.” (Qur’an 40:71–72)
Hadith reference
The Prophet (pbuh) explained this punishment clearly: “The people will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection in three groups: (1) those who will be riding, (2) those who will be walking, and (3) those who will be dragged on their faces.” The Companions asked: “O Messenger of Allah, how will they be dragged on their faces?” He replied: “The One Who made them walk on their feet is able to make them walk on their faces.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6522; Sahih Muslim 2864)
To be dragged on one’s face is the peak of dishonor. In this world, falling on the face is shameful; in the next world, it will be eternal humiliation. The Qur’an contrasts this with the believers, who will be honored, with their faces shining with light welcomed into Jannah:
