Afghan Olympic Official Appointed to Islamic Sports Commission
By Abdullahi Yusuf
Yonus Popalzai, Secretary General of Afghanistan’s National Olympic Committee (NOC), has been appointed to the Strategic Programs Commission of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Islamic Countries (ANOCIC). His membership was confirmed during the commission’s inaugural meeting, chaired by ANOCIC President Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, alongside the association’s Secretary General, Nasser Majali.
The meeting, held recently in Albania, brought together representatives from ANOCIC’s 57 member states to discuss strategic initiatives aimed at advancing sports development and cooperation across the Islamic world.
Popalzai’s appointment highlights Afghanistan’s growing influence in international sports governance, reinforcing the country’s commitment to promoting sports despite facing significant challenges at home. His new role provides Afghanistan with a platform to contribute to sports development policies that reflect the diverse needs and aspirations of Islamic nations.
The commission’s mandate includes fostering collaboration, launching inclusive sports programs, and supporting athletic development across member countries. Popalzai is expected to play a key role in shaping impactful initiatives that benefit athletes and sports organizations within the Islamic world.
This appointment marks a positive step forward for Afghanistan’s NOC as it strengthens its global presence while continuing to advocate for sports growth domestically and internationally.
