Zaria Kicks Off Historic Mallam AbdulKarim Mosque Reconstruction

The historic Mallam AbdulKarim mosque in Zaria is set to be reconstructed after a groundbreaking ceremony attended by key dignitaries, including Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Uba Sani, on Sunday. The event also saw the participation of the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, former Kaduna State Governor Ramalan Yero, and several serving members of the National Assembly.

Originally built in 1836, the mosque tragically collapsed on August 11, 2023, while worshippers were praying, resulting in six fatalities and several injuries. The reconstruction of the mosque, a critical cultural and religious landmark in Zaria, was marked as a significant step in the community’s efforts to preserve its rich heritage.

In his address at the event, Speaker Abbas underscored the mosque’s importance to the people of Zaria and highlighted the historical significance of the occasion, noting that it was the second groundbreaking ceremony for the mosque in 183 years. Abbas pointed out that the new mosque, once completed, could become the largest in Northern Nigeria and one of the largest in West Africa. However, he noted that the 18-month completion timeline was contingent on securing adequate funding for the project.

Abbas, who also holds the traditional title of Iyan Zazzau, expressed gratitude to Nigerians who have supported the project thus far. He revealed that the funds raised so far covered about 50-60% of the estimated cost and urged wealthier individuals to contribute generously to help complete the mosque.

Governor Uba Sani also praised the donations made, particularly from billionaire businessman Abdulsamad Rabiu and Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal. He emphasized the critical role of public and private sector collaboration in realizing the vision for the mosque’s reconstruction.

The Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Bamali, spoke about the painful yet necessary decision to demolish the old mosque, citing expert advice that repairing the structure was not feasible. He also recognized the efforts of former Vice President Namadi Sambo and former Governor Nasir El-Rufai in facilitating the commencement of the reconstruction.

Governor Sani had previously provided financial assistance to the victims of the collapse, compensated owners of affected buildings, and ensured that access roads were provided to aid the reconstruction process. The Emir acknowledged the governor’s unwavering commitment to the project.

The new mosque will incorporate modern facilities, including dedicated ablution areas, a library, an ICT center, and administrative offices. These advancements aim to create a space for prayer and reflection while honoring the mosque’s historical significance.

The reconstruction of the Mallam AbdulKarim mosque marks a defining moment in the history of Zaria, symbolizing the community’s resilience and its dedication to preserving its cultural and religious heritage for future generations.
