Vice President Shettima Arrives in Saudi Arabia for Lesser Hajj and Diplomatic Talks

Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in Madinah, Saudi Arabia, to perform the lesser hajj (Umrah), a significant religious pilgrimage for Muslims.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, it was confirmed that Shettima arrived at Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport on Monday. He was warmly received by Abdulmohsen Bin Nayef Bin Hamed, the deputy governor of the Madinah region, along with Nigerian diplomatic officials.

Shettima’s visit to Saudi Arabia will span from December 16 to 19, during which he will visit the holy cities of Madinah and Makkah. In addition to his religious duties, he will also engage in diplomatic discussions with the President of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) in Jeddah regarding co-financing for Nigeria’s Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ Phase II).

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State is accompanying the vice president on the trip.

“The Vice President is in Madinah to visit the Holy Mosque of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and other sacred sites,” the statement explained.

Following his stay in Madinah, Vice President Shettima will continue to Makkah to perform the Umrah pilgrimage. On December 20, 2024, he is scheduled to meet with the President of the Islamic Development Bank in Jeddah. The bilateral talks will focus on advancing co-financing arrangements for SAPZ Phase II and enhancing collaboration on IsDB projects in Nigeria to foster agricultural and economic growth.
