Tinubu Renames Azare Medical University After Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi
President honours late Islamic scholar during condolence visit to Bauchi

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renamed the Federal University of Medical Sciences, Azare, Bauchi State, in honour of the late Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi.
The president announced the decision on Saturday during a condolence visit to the cleric’s family at their residence in Bauchi, saying the move was meant to immortalise Sheikh Bauchi and acknowledge his lifelong contributions to Islamic scholarship, humanity and peaceful coexistence.
Tinubu described the death of the renowned scholar as a great loss to Nigeria, noting that Sheikh Bauchi was widely respected for his humility, selfless service and dedication to the propagation of Islam through peace and tolerance.
He prayed for Allah’s mercy upon the late cleric and asked that he be granted Jannatul Firdaus. The president also prayed for strength for the family, the Bauchi State Government and the people of the state to bear the loss, while calling on Nigerians to continue praying for unity and peace in the country.
Speaking on behalf of the family, the eldest son of the late scholar, Ibrahim Usman Bauchi, thanked the president for the visit, prayers and the honour accorded to their father. He also expressed gratitude to Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed for his continued support.
Governor Mohammed described the renaming of the university as a fitting recognition of Sheikh Bauchi’s enduring legacy and his immense impact on Islamic learning and society.
Tinubu was accompanied on the visit by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni and other senior government officials.
The president arrived in Bauchi via the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport, where he was received by state officials and accorded a guard of honour by the Nigerian Air Force.
The condolence visit formed part of the president’s engagements to commiserate with the family and followers of the late scholar, whose influence in Islamic education and preaching spanned decades within and beyond Nigeria.
