The Call Beyond Sleep (Golden Words of Allah – Episode 57)

“The Mu’adhdhin calls out during the Fajr prayer: ‘As-Salatu Khayrun Minan-Nawm’ (Prayer is better than sleep).” (Sunan Abu Dawud, Hadith 500; Sahih)

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. All perfect praise is due to Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, the Lord of the Worlds. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah, and Muhammad (pbuh), is His slave and final Messenger.

Introduction
In the quiet hours of the early morning, when sleep clings sweetly to the eyes and silence fills the world, a distinct phrase is heard in the Adhan for Fajr: “As-Salatu Khayrun Minan-Nawm” – “Prayer is better than sleep.” It is a call not only for the body to rise but for the soul to awaken and turn to its Lord before the sun rises.

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) instructed that this phrase be added to the Adhan for Fajr, setting it apart from the other calls to prayer (Sunan Abu Dawud, Hadith 500). It is but a powerful reminder that the sweetness of standing before Allah far surpasses the temporary comfort of sleep.

The Qur’an highlights the significance of this time: “Establish the prayer at the decline of the sun until the darkness of the night and (also) the Qur’an at dawn. Indeed, the recitation of the Qur’an at dawn is ever witnessed.” (Surah Al-Isra’ 17:78)

Fajr is the time when angels of the night and day meet, bearing witness to those who answer the call. The Prophet (pbuh) said: “Whoever prays the two cool prayers (Fajr and Asr) will enter Paradise.”(Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

At this hour, the believer resists the temptation to remain under the warmth of his blanket and strives for a greater reward: Allah’s pleasure and the success of the Hereafter.

Sleep nourishes the body, but prayer nourishes the soul. Choosing prayer over sleep brings immense blessings: it brings closeness to Allah at a time of divine mercy. It brings barakah (blessings) in one’s day, as the Prophet (pbuh) prayed: “O Allah, bless my Ummah in their early hours.” (Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 2236; Sahih) A shield from Shaytan, who whispers: “The night is long, so sleep.” This struggle becomes an act of worship, and those who rise at Fajr are marked among the truthful and sincere servants of Allah.

The Prophet (pbuh) warned: “Satan ties three knots at the back of your heads when you sleep… But if you get up and pray, the knots are undone, and you rise in the morning lively and in good spirits; otherwise you wake up lazy and with a gloomy heart.”!(Sahih al-Bukhari; Sahih Muslim)

Thus, each time the Mu’adhdhin announces “Prayer is better than sleep”, it is a gentle reminder that eternal success outweighs temporary comfort. The next time you hear “As-Salatu Khayrun Minan-Nawm”, let it stir your soul and remind you: to rise is to triumph, to respond is to succeed, and to pray is better than to sleep.
