Sheikh Gumi Urges Plan to End Almajiri System in Northern Nigeria

Islamic scholar calls for balanced education combining faith and modern learning

Controversial Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has called for a structured “Marshall Plan” to gradually phase out the Almajiri system in Northern Nigeria, emphasizing the need to integrate Islamic moral teachings with modern education.

Gumi said the region has the potential to lead Nigeria’s education sector within the next 15 years if the Almajiri system is carefully reformed and replaced with a curriculum that respects both faith and contemporary learning.

Highlighting Northern Nigeria’s educational capacity, he noted the presence of about 150 public and private universities in the region, which he believes could serve as a foundation for transforming the educational landscape.

In a post on X, Sheikh Gumi stressed that a comprehensive plan is needed to ensure that children in the Almajiri system receive proper Islamic guidance alongside modern knowledge, preparing them for meaningful participation in society.

He added that peace and stability are essential for the success of the plan, emphasizing that education reforms must occur in an environment that supports learning and religious growth.

“Northern Nigeria, with approximately 150 public and private universities, is expected to lead the educational sector of Nigerian society in the next fifteen years,” Gumi said.

“What should be done is to implement a ‘Marshall Plan’ to phase out the Almajiri system, combining a curriculum that blends moral education rooted in Islam with modernity. Therefore, we need peace,” he concluded.
