MPAC hails Supreme Court ruling on Muslim students’ worship
urges compliance with ruling, calls for end to discrimination

The Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC), Nigeria, has welcomed a Supreme Court ruling dismissing an appeal by Rivers State University and affirming the constitutional right of Muslim students to worship freely on campus.
In a statement signed by its Executive Chairman, Disu Kamor, the group described the judgment as a significant affirmation of constitutional rights and religious freedom.
The legal dispute, which spanned more than a decade, centered on the right of Muslim students at Rivers State University to observe prayers on campus. According to MPAC, the students pursued the matter through the courts rather than resorting to protests or unrest.
MPAC commended the judiciary “at every level” for upholding what it described as fundamental rights guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution.
The organization called on the university authorities to comply fully with the Supreme Court ruling and implement the judgment without delay.
“Continued defiance would amount to disregard for constitutional order and the rule of law,” the statement said.
MPAC also urged the institution to end what it described as discriminatory practices against Muslim students, emphasizing that universities should serve as inclusive environments for learning and engagement.
The group said the judgment carries broader implications for Muslim minority communities in parts of southern Nigeria, where it claimed some individuals face challenges exercising religious rights in public institutions.
MPAC expressed hope that the ruling would mark a turning point in ensuring equal treatment for religious minorities nationwide.
