Meningitis Vaccination Now Mandatory for Umrah Pilgrims from Oman

By Abdullahi Yusuf

The Ministry of Health has announced that Omani citizens and residents planning to perform Umrah must receive the quadrivalent meningitis vaccine at least 10 days before traveling to Saudi Arabia. A valid vaccination certificate, issued through the ministry’s Tarassud system, must be presented upon departure, and this certificate will remain valid for five years.

Vaccinations are available at primary healthcare institutions for citizens and at designated private health centers for expatriates. The Ministry also recommends receiving the annual seasonal influenza vaccine to further enhance protection during the pilgrimage.

This new requirement aligns with Saudi Arabia’s decision to implement stricter health protocols for Umrah pilgrims, ensuring the safety and well-being of millions of worshippers. In addition to meningococcal meningitis, Saudi authorities now mandate vaccinations for polio, yellow fever, COVID-19, and seasonal influenza.

The Saudi Civil Aviation Authority also confirmed that all international pilgrims must be vaccinated against meningitis, with additional vaccination requirements for travelers from polio-affected regions, such as Pakistan, Nigeria, and Afghanistan, as well as those from Angola, Nigeria, Brazil, and Congo for yellow fever.
