Kebbi Governor Declares 39th National Quranic Recitation Competition Open

Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, officially inaugurated the 39th National Quranic Recitation Competition on Friday at the Convocation Arena of Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi.

The prestigious event, hosted by Kebbi State for the first time in over 20 years, brought together an array of dignitaries, including the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Elkanemi, the Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Muhammadu Iliyasu Bashar, and the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Sama’ila Muhammadu Mera. Other notable attendees included Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, the immediate past Governor of Kebbi State, and Alhaji Saidu Nasamu Dakingari, former Governor of Kebbi State.

In his opening remarks, Governor Idris expressed his joy and honor in hosting the historic competition, describing it as a momentous occasion for the state.

“Today, we are making history. I am the happiest person for being found worthy to host this very important Islamic event in Birnin Kebbi. It is a rare privilege, and when the delegation approached me with the request to host, I had no hesitation in accepting it,” he stated.

He extended a warm welcome to participants from across the nation and applauded the organizers for their dedication to the success of the event.

The Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Elkanemi, who served as the Royal Father of the Day, underscored the significance of the Holy Qur’an and its virtues. He commended the Sultan of Sokoto for his exemplary leadership, praised Governor Idris for his commitment to the event, and lauded the organizers for preserving the tradition of the competition.

Representing the organizing body, the Vice Chancellor of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto, Prof. Bashir Garba, described the Qur’an as a guide and blessing for humanity. He urged all participants and attendees to use the event as an opportunity to reconnect with the Qur’an and their Creator.

A lecture on the historical background of the Qur’an was delivered by Professor Aliyu Bunza, enriching the occasion with scholarly perspectives.

The Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Sama’ila Muhammadu Mera, who chairs the Local Organizing Committee, expressed gratitude to Governor Idris for his unwavering support and to donors for their contributions toward the competition’s success.

The annual National Quranic Recitation Competition is organized by Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto through its Centre for Islamic Studies, with Kebbi State playing host this year.
