Iranian Cleric Warns Against Division Over Hijab

A senior Iranian cleric, Ayatollah Mohammad Javad Fazel Lankarani, has said Muslims should not be divided over hijab issues at a time when Iran and the Islamic world are facing security threats and wartime pressure.

The cleric said hijab remains an Islamic obligation, but stressed that women without proper hijab should not be stopped from attending public gatherings held in support of the country during the ongoing crisis.

According to him, national unity and defense of the country should take priority during difficult times. He said people willing to support the nation should not be pushed away over secondary issues.

Fazel Lankarani also said it would be wrong to question the religious practices of those defending the country during wartime, adding that preserving unity is more important during periods of national danger.

Meanwhile, Nour News, a media outlet linked to Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, called for “reason and moderation” in public discourse. In an article published to mark the day of Islamic philosopher Mulla Sadra, the outlet urged dialogue and balanced religious understanding instead of social conflict and ideological confrontation.

The report criticized both extreme religious rigidity and total rejection of religion, saying Iranian society needs calm discussion and thoughtful interpretation of tradition.

While the remarks do not signal an official change in Iran’s hijab policies, observers say they reflect growing concern among some Iranian figures about preserving social unity during the current tensions facing the country.
