Iran Demands Release of Detained Iranian Citizens from Kuwait

By Sadiq Abdulfatah

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has accused Kuwait of carrying out an “unlawful” attack on an Iranian boat and detaining four Iranian nationals near a Gulf island, calling for their immediate release.

In remarks reported on Wednesday, Araghchi said the incident took place close to an area allegedly used by US forces and described Kuwait’s action as illegal.

“We reserve the right to respond,” he warned.

Kuwait’s Interior Ministry, however, said security forces arrested four individuals it described as members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) while they were attempting to enter the country by sea.

The ministry did not provide further details about the arrest or charges.

The incident adds to rising tensions in Gulf waters following months of regional instability linked to the conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

A ceasefire brokered earlier in April has held unevenly, while diplomatic efforts to reach a lasting agreement are still ongoing.
