How Much Is Too Much For Fidau Prayer? A Call For Reflection.
The Chief Imam of Lekki Central Mosque, Lagos State, Sheikh Ridwanullahi Jamiu, A renowned Islamic scholar, during an event organized by the Lekki Muslim Ummah, LEMU, Recently, called on Muslims, to reflect on the Fidau Prayer practice in honor of their deceased loved ones, saying the ceremonial gatherings usually organized in most parts of the country, is not acceptable in Islam. It goes against the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w), whose teachings, Muslims should always adhere to in their everyday life. He said Muslims should be strongly discouraged from taking part in ceremonial Fidau Prayer for their deceased loved ones.
He said: “Anything you want to do as a Muslim must be guided by the Holy Qur’an and the teachings of our noble Prophet Muhammed. There is no proof in the Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah of the prophet, that one can do any Fidau prayers for the deceased person. But it is the sunnah according to the Quran and sayings of the Prophet, we should always remember our deceased person with prayers all the time not choosing a particular day. Allah said we should always remember those who came before us in our prayers all the time. That’s an individual thing. But when a person just died, what is recommended in Islam, is Solatul Janaazah. All scholars know this. Solatul Janaazah is the prayer where the imam stands and people stand behind him and the corpse is placed in front of the Imam who will say Takbir four times or thereabouts. That’s the only prayer that is recommended. The coming together for a special ceremony or prayer after the funeral prayer is not found in Islam, neither the Qur’an nor the Sunnah of the Prophet. Therefore, we have to abstain from it so that we won’t end up wasting our resources on something that is not based on any evidence.”
He also added that doing the ceremony under the guise of charity is not acceptable in Islam. He stated that Muslims must be strictly guided by the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W). He quoted the Sunnah of the Prophet on how things should be done when a family is bereaved.“The Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) said that anyone who does anything or any act of worship which is not based on our teachings, is rejected”.
Further, The Chief Imam stated ways the deceased’s family can obtain rewards for them, such as Charity, a project completed by the deceased’s family, in the person’s name. Also, the helpful knowledge the deceased has impacted people before they passed, they would receive the reward whether they are alive or not.
He further advised that these charities and projects should not be done ceremoniously or targeted at an anniversary. Muslims should pray for the deceased every day not on special occasions.
