Afghanistan’s Minister for the Promotion of Virtue, Prevention of Vice and Hearing of Complaints, Shaikh Mohammad Khalid Hanafi, has called on religious scholars to educate the public about Islamic commands and prohibitions.
According to a statement issued by the ministry, Hanafi made the call while addressing a seminar organised for officials responsible for implementing the ministry’s activities.
He said scholars have a duty to explain Islamic teachings to the public and help people understand their religious obligations as well as actions prohibited under Islam.
The minister also referred to the Law on the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, saying it gives ministry officials the authority required to perform their duties.
He directed the officials to carry out their responsibilities in line with the provisions of the law and comply with established procedures in performing their assigned tasks.
Hanafi urged participants at the seminar to remain committed to their responsibilities and ensure that their activities are carried out within the limits set by the relevant legal provisions.
The seminar also provided an opportunity to discuss the duties of muhtasibs and the responsibility of religious scholars to educate members of the public on Islamic teachings.
