Golden Words of Allah (episode 33)

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. All perfect praise be to Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, the Lord of the Worlds. We testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, (pbuh), is His slave and Messenger.

“The Scale of Deeds”

Introduction
Imagine standing before an unfathomable scale, where every action you’ve ever done, big or small, seen or hidden, is placed and measured. The idea is both humbling and awe-inspiring. In Islam, this is not just a metaphor; it is the reality of the Day of Judgment. The Quran vividly describes this scale, known as the Mizan, as a symbol of Allah’s perfect justice and mercy. It reminds us that life is not just fleeting moments but a series of actions and intentions that will one day determine our eternal fate. This concept urges us to pause and reflect: how heavy will our scales be when the time comes?

1. The Purpose of the Scale
The Scale as in the Quran represents a tool of perfect justice, It reflects Allah’s justice in rewarding or punishing individuals based on their deeds, ensuring that no soul is wronged.
Quranic References: “And We will set up the scales of justice on the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be dealt with unjustly at all. And if there is [even] the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as accountant.” (Surah Al-Anbiya, 21:47).
• “Whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.” (Surah Az-Zalzalah, 99:7-8)

2. The Nature of Deeds: Good and Bad
Deeds, both good and bad, are recorded by the angels and will be presented on the Day of Judgment. The Quran distinguishes between those who perform righteous acts and those who engage in sin, with their deeds tipping the scales accordingly.
Quranic References: “Then as for one whose scales are heavy [with good deeds], he will be in a pleasant life. But as for one whose scales are light, his refuge will be an abyss.” (Surah Al-Qari’ah, 101:6-9).
• “Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds – We will not allow to be lost the reward of any who did well in deeds.” (Surah Al-Kahf, 18:30)

3. The Record of Deeds
The Quran describes the meticulous recording of every individual’s actions by appointed angels. These records will be presented as evidence, leaving no room for denial.
Quranic References: “And the record [of deeds] will be placed [open], and you will see the criminals fearful of that within it, and they will say, ‘Woe to us! What is this book that leaves nothing small or great except that it has enumerated it?’ And they will find what they did present [before them]. And your Lord does injustice to no one.” (Surah Al-Kahf, 18:49).
• “Every person is a pledge for what he has earned.” (Surah At-Tur, 52:21)

4. The Weight of Sincerity
The Quran teaches that deeds are not judged solely by their quantity but by their quality and sincerity. Even a seemingly small act, if done with pure intentions, can weigh heavily on the scale.
Quranic References: “Indeed, Allah does not wrong the people at all, but it is the people who are wronging themselves.” (Surah Yunus, 10:44).
• “The example of those who spend their wealth seeking Allah’s pleasure and to strengthen their souls is like a garden on high ground. If heavy rain falls, it doubles its yield; and if it does not receive heavy rain, then a drizzle [is sufficient].” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:265)

5. Acts That Tip the Scale
Certain deeds hold immense weight in the sight of Allah and can significantly tip the scales in a believer’s favor.

Examples from the Quran and Sunnah

•Faith (Iman): “But those who believed and did righteous deeds – We will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding eternally therein by permission of their Lord. And their greeting therein will be, ‘Peace!’” (Surah Ibrahim, 14:23)

•Good Character: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “The heaviest thing to be placed in the balance of a believing slave on the Day of Judgment will be good character.” (Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Hadith 2003)

•Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah): The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “There are two statements that are light on the tongue, heavy on the scale, and beloved to the Most Merciful: ‘SubhanAllahi wa bihamdihi, SubhanAllahi Al-Azeem.’” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 6406)

6. Allah’s Mercy
While the Scale of Deeds emphasizes justice, Allah’s mercy plays a crucial role in tipping the scales for believers. The Quran and Sunnah highlight that ultimate salvation is a combination of faith, righteous deeds, and Allah’s mercy.

Quranic References: “And My Mercy encompasses all things.” (Surah Al-A’raf, 7:156).
• “Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.” (Surah Az-Zumar, 39:53)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also said: “No one will enter Paradise by his deeds alone.” The companions asked, “Not even you, O Messenger of Allah?” He said, “Not even me, unless Allah grants me His mercy.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 5673)

Conclusion
As we navigate through life, every action, whether seen or unseen, carries weight and significance. The concept of the Mizan in the Quran serves as a powerful reminder that our deeds are not only known to us but will be weighed with perfect justice in the sight of Allah. This awareness should inspire us to live consciously, ensuring that our actions align with goodness, sincerity, and faith. In the end, the scale will not just reflect the sum of our deeds but also the intentions behind them. Let this knowledge guide our everyday choices, for it is the quality of our actions, driven by the right intentions, that will tip the scale in our favor on the Day of Judgment.
