Friend of Allah (Golden Words of Allah – Ep 73)

“Unquestionably, the friends of Allah shall have no fear, nor shall they grieve – those who believed and were conscious of Him.”(Surah Yunus, 10:62-63)

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. All perfect praise is due to Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, the Lord of the Worlds. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah, and Muhammad (pbuh), is His slave and final Messenger.

To be a close friend of Allah is one of the greatest honours a Muslim can ever attain. It is a status that fills the heart with light and brings a person under Allah’s special care and protection. Many Muslims hear the word Wali but do not truly understand what it means, who qualifies for it, or how this nearness to Allah is achieved. To be a walī is to live under the guidance and protection of the Most Merciful and to leave this world in a state of peace.

The Prophet (pbuh) clarified this noble rank in a powerful hadith qudsī. Allah says:“Whoever shows enmity to a walī of Mine, I have declared war against him. My servant draws nearer to Me with nothing more beloved to Me than the obligations I have commanded. And My servant continues to draw nearer to Me with voluntary acts until I love him.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 6502)

Friendship with Allah does not require miracles, public recognition, or special status. The awliya often walk among people unnoticed. Their signs are simple, yet profound: They possess deep and sincere Iman, perform righteous deeds consistently, their hearts are soft, humble, and filled with remembrance of Allah, they avoid sin, not out of fear of people, but out of love for Allah, they bear trials with patience and gratitude. These are the people for whom Allah becomes friends with.

Allah promised that: “For them are glad tidings in this life and in the Hereafter.”(Surah Yunus, 10:64)

Their hearts are protected from despair. Their souls are protected from misguidance. Their path is blessed, even when it appears difficult to others. It is also important to note that, friends of Allah are not free from hardship, but they are never abandoned in hardship.

Becoming close to Allah is not a mystery. Islam lays out the path clearly:

1. Fulfill all obligations; prayer, fasting, zakāh, honesty, mercy, and good character.

2. Increase in voluntary deeds; Tahajjud, dhikr, charity, extra fasting.

3. Purify the heart; avoid arrogance, envy, hatred, and show humility.

4. Guard the limbs; the eyes, ears, and tongue from sin.

5. Remain patient and content with Allah’s decree.

To become a friend of Allah is not only reserved for scholars or saints, it is open to every Muslim who strives sincerely. Young or old, male or female. He who gives his heart to Allah finds himself drawn into Allah’s divine friendship.

Whoever walks toward Allah, Allah comes to him running. May Allah make us among His close friends.
