Fajr Centre Sets New Milestone with First Haflatul Qur’an Graduates

In a momentous stride toward promoting Qur’anic education in Nigeria, Fajr Centre, an Islamic institution dedicated to Qur’an memorisation, is set to graduate its first cohort of hufaadh (memorisers of the Qur’an) on December 15, 2024. This groundbreaking achievement will be celebrated in a grand haflah (graduation ceremony) at the Ikorodu Local Government Premises, Agric Bus Stop, Lagos.
Established in 2019 and fully operational since 2022, Fajr Centre has earned its place among Nigeria’s foremost Qur’anic institutions, committed to producing well-rounded graduates steeped in Islamic knowledge. The first graduating class comprises ten students, including three remarkable young women whose exceptional memorisation skills have earned them recognition and a spot in the upcoming National Qur’anic Competition.
The institution was co-founded by Alhaji Zikrullah Kunle Hassan, former Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), and his wife, Alhaja Mutiat Olasumbo Hassan, who has spearheaded its development in her husband’s absence due to national duties.
Reflecting on the journey, Alhaja Mutiat shared the inspiration behind the centre, “My husband has always been passionate about mentoring young people, and Fajr Centre reflects that commitment. Although I never saw myself managing such an institution, he believed in my capabilities. Today, I can say managing the centre has been a deeply rewarding experience.”
She highlighted the critical role of public support, noting that several students are on full scholarships funded by well-meaning individuals.
“We want more children enrolled, but we need more sponsors to support this noble cause. The results speak for themselves—our female students, who we initially hesitated to admit, are now top performers.”
Fajr Centre’s success story would be incomplete without acknowledging the achievements of its female students. Alhaji Zikrullah Kunle Hassan admitted that their initial reluctance to admit girls stemmed from concerns about providing adequate care and maintaining high standards of Islamic modesty.
“We were hesitant about including girls, but my daughter insisted we give them a chance. Today, the girls have outshone expectations and are representing Lagos State at the National Qur’anic Competition. This has reinforced our belief that both genders must be given equal opportunities in Islamic education.”
The Centre maintains strict gender separation in boarding, worship, and classes, ensuring a safe and disciplined environment.
Beyond memorisation, the curriculum includes essential Islamic sciences such as tajweed, nahw (Arabic grammar), sarf (morphology), fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), tawheed (Islamic monotheism), and akhlaaq (Islamic ethics).
“Memorising the Qur’an is the foundation, but we also prepare our students for leadership roles by equipping them with in-depth Islamic knowledge,” Alhaji Hassan explained. “We dream of graduating hundreds of hufaadh every year, including working professionals and retirees passionate about Islam.”
According to Ustaz Akolade Tajudeen Mukaila, one of the institution’s senior instructors, Fajr Centre’s journey has evolved through different educational models, including weekend and intensive holiday camps, before settling on a comprehensive two-year programme.
“We experimented with several formats but realised that a fully immersive, two-year Qur’anic memorisation programme was the most effective. Our graduates today are proof that dedication, structure, and divine support yield remarkable results,” he stated.
As Fajr Centre prepares for its grand haflah on December 15, the founders remain committed to expanding the institution’s reach and inspiring a new generation of Qur’an-loving Muslims across Nigeria.
“This journey has only just begun,” Alhaji Hassan affirmed. “With Allah’s guidance and the continued support of our community, Fajr Centre will become a beacon of Qur’anic excellence for generations to come.”
