Ekiti State Makes History with the Inauguration of Shariah Arbitration Panel

Ekiti State has made a landmark achievement with the inauguration of its Independent Shariah Arbitration Panel in Ado Ekiti. The event, held in the state capital, was attended by notable Islamic leaders from the South West and Kwara State, marking a new chapter in the administration of justice for the Muslim community.

Representing Governor Biodun Oyebanji, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaja (Dr) Habibat Adubiaro, congratulated Muslims in Ekiti for the establishment of the panel. She emphasized that the initiative aligns with the Islamic legal framework and demonstrates the government’s commitment to religious harmony. Dr. Adubiaro reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to inclusivity, highlighting the appointment of Muslims to various political positions and ensuring the rights of Muslim women to wear hijab in schools and workplaces.

Justice Abdul-Lateef Kamaldeen, Grand Qadi of the Kwara State Shariah Court of Appeal, commended the Muslim community for this accomplishment. He noted that Ekiti State joins Lagos, Oyo, and Osun States in establishing an independent Shariah Arbitration Panel in South West Nigeria. Justice Kamaldeen explained that the panel’s jurisdiction covers family disputes, property issues, and commercial disagreements, offering resolutions grounded in Islamic law.

The President of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Ekiti State, Alhaji (Dr) Hammed Bakare, described the panel as a vital step toward ensuring justice and fairness in line with Islamic principles. He lauded the governor for his continued support of the Muslim community and called for the eventual establishment of a Shariah Court of Appeal in the state.

The panel comprises 11 members, including Chairman Mr. Sulayman Ganiy Isikaye and Secretary Barrister Surajudeen Owoeye. Other members are distinguished Islamic scholars and professionals dedicated to resolving disputes with impartiality and adherence to Islamic tenets.

Speakers at the event, including the President of the League of Imams and Alfas, South West, Edo, and Delta States, Sheikh Jamiu Kewulere-Bello, and other clerics, urged panelists to uphold fairness and avoid bias in their rulings. They highlighted the importance of Shariah as a divine guide for Muslims to live their lives and resolve disputes.

The inauguration ceremony also saw significant support from dignitaries, with donations made toward establishing a Secretariat for the panel. Among the contributors were the Aare Musulumi of Ekiti State, Alhaji Abdul-Ganiy Adebiyi, and members of the state government.

The Shariah Arbitration Panel will operate temporarily from the Ado Ekiti Central Mosque, focusing on fostering harmony and resolving disputes in line with Islamic law.
