BREAKING: Tinubu Appoints Ismail Abba Yusuf as NAHCON chairman
Appointment subject to Senate confirmation following Usman’s resignation
By Abdullahi Yusuf
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Amb. Ismail Abba Yusuf as the new chairman and chief executive officer of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), the Presidency said Wednesday.
The appointment is subject to Senate confirmation in accordance with Section 3(2) of the NAHCON Act, 2026.
In a letter transmitted to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu requested the expeditious screening and confirmation of Yusuf to replace Prof. Abdullahi Saleh Usman, who resigned earlier this week after about 14 months in office.
Usman had announced his resignation effective Feb. 9, citing personal reasons.
According to a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Yusuf is a career diplomat who served as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Türkiye from 2021 to 2024.
The nomination comes amid leadership changes at the commission as Nigeria prepares for upcoming Hajj operations.
NAHCON is the federal agency responsible for the regulation and coordination of Hajj and Umrah operations in Nigeria, including the licensing of tour operators and the welfare of pilgrims.
