Bangladesh Government Moves to Control Food Prices Ahead of Ramadan

The interim government is taking measures to ensure the prices of essential food items remain manageable during the upcoming Ramadan, Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin announced.

“I understand the difficulties people are facing. We are working on it. Prices of onion, sugar, and oil have already shown slight decreases,” Bashir said during an event hosted by Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU). The occasion marked the distribution of education allowances, supported by NRBC Bank, to 30 children of deceased DRU members.

Bashir emphasized the government’s commitment to stabilizing the market before Ramadan, aiming to balance supply and demand. “Our goal is to make the market as tolerable as possible for everyone,” he stated.

Food inflation in Bangladesh remains high, with prices of essential items typically spiking ahead of Ramadan. This adds strain to households with limited incomes. Bashir attributed the current challenges to systemic issues and malpractices that have developed over the past 15 years.

“We faced a deeply divided society where fear prevailed. Now, a new government has emerged from a student-led mass movement, determined to transform the nation into a more dignified society,” Bashir remarked.

The event was chaired by DRU President Syed Shukur Ali Shuvo, with General Secretary Mohi Uddin also addressing the gathering.
