Two Igbo Muslims Join others as Imams of National Mosque

The National Mosque in Abuja has unveiled two Igbo Muslims as part of the five new Imams of the mosque. This is a welcome development and a confirmation of the universality of Islam. The Igbo people, who are predominantly from the South Eastern States of Nigeria, have long faced challenges in practicing Islam, enduring persecution, humiliation, and consequences for their faith.

However, the appointment of these two Igbo Muslims as Imams marks a significant step in recognizing the diverse representation within the Islamic community in Nigeria.

The five new Imams were unveiled on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, by the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA). Their appointment followed consideration by the General Purpose Committee and was officially endorsed by the National Fatwa Committee.

The newly appointed Imams are:

1.Professor Ilyasu Usman (Enugu State)

2.Professor Luqman Zakariyah (Osun State)

3.Professor Khalid Aliyu Abubakar (Plateau State)

4.Barrister Haroun Muhammad Eze (Enugu State)

5.Dr. Sheikh Abdulkadir Salman (Kwara State)
