5.8 Magnitude Quake Hits Off Türkiye’s Southwest Coast, Teen Killed

Tremor off Marmaris sparks alarm in quake-weary nation still healing from 2023 disaster

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck in the Mediterranean Sea early Tuesday, just off the coast of Türkiye’s southwestern Muğla province, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

The quake’s epicenter was located 10.4 kilometers (6.5 miles) from the Marmaris district and occurred at a depth of 67.9 kilometers (42.1 miles), AFAD said in a statement.

While initial reports confirmed no structural damage to buildings in populated areas, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said a 14-year-old girl in the nearby resort town of Fethiye died after suffering a panic attack triggered by the tremor.

Emergency teams were dispatched to monitor the situation and assess possible aftershocks, though authorities stated there was no immediate threat of a tsunami or significant secondary impacts.

Türkiye, which lies atop several active fault lines, is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world.

In February 2023, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed more than 53,000 people and left widespread destruction across 11 southern and southeastern provinces.

The disaster also claimed the lives of over 6,000 people in northern Syria.

Authorities continue to stress the importance of preparedness and structural resilience in vulnerable regions.
