1448AH: Clerics Urge Govt Action on Hardship, Insecurity

The Progressive Muslim Clerics in Ogun State have called for stronger government action to tackle insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment and growing social inequality in Nigeria.
They made the appeal during a press briefing at Iwe Irohin House in Abeokuta to mark the Islamic New Year 1448AH.
The group’s President, Alhaji AbdWasiu Akinyemi, said the Hijrah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) offers lessons in patience, sacrifice, planning and societal reform that remain relevant to Nigeria’s current situation.
He said the country is facing multiple challenges including insecurity, corruption, abuse of power, unemployment, poverty, religious intolerance and moral decline, stressing that no society can thrive without justice and fairness.
Akinyemi also stressed the need to invest in young people through education, skills training, entrepreneurship and civic participation, saying youth development is key to national progress.
On the economy, the clerics called for policies that promote poverty reduction, fair resource distribution, financial inclusion and stronger social welfare systems to ease the burden on citizens.
He acknowledged reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, including subsidy removal, foreign exchange unification and energy sector reforms, describing them as tough but necessary for long-term growth. He urged Nigerians to remain patient, referencing the Qur’anic message that hardship is followed by ease.
The clerics also called for national unity, urging Nigerians to rise above religious and ethnic divisions and embrace peace, tolerance and mutual respect for the country’s development.
