Zulum Strengthens Islamic Education with Two Mega Schools in Hawul

Governor launches High Islamic College and modern mega school to blend Qur’anic learning with formal education in Borno

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has begun the construction of two major educational projects in Hawul Local Government Area, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening Islamic and formal education in the state.

One of the projects is a 48-classroom High Islamic College located in Shafa. The institution will operate under the approved curriculum of the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS), combining authentic Islamic scholarship with modern academic subjects to produce well-rounded students grounded in faith and knowledge.

Governor Zulum explained that the High Islamic College initiative is a fulfilment of his campaign promise to integrate Qur’anic education with contemporary learning, ensuring students gain literacy, numeracy, digital skills, and vocational training alongside sound Islamic teachings.

The second mega school, sited in Marama town, is designed to expand access to quality education across Hawul and neighboring communities. The facility will feature a two-storey building with 36 classrooms and supporting infrastructure, aimed at easing pressure on existing schools.

During the foundation-laying ceremony, the governor announced plans to recruit additional teachers, stressing that priority would be given to qualified indigenes of the host community to strengthen local participation and ownership of the project.

Zulum noted that education remains a key pillar of his administration, particularly in rebuilding Borno after years of conflict. He said empowering young people through both Islamic knowledge and formal education is essential for long-term peace, moral discipline, and economic growth.

Beyond education, the governor also visited the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Azare, recently rehabilitated and handed over by the state government to support healthcare delivery in the area. He further inaugurated a shopping complex and market stalls executed by the Hawul Local Government.

The governor was accompanied by top government officials, lawmakers, traditional stakeholders, and political leaders from Southern Borno, underscoring broad support for projects aimed at nurturing learning, faith, and development across the state.
