UNILAG Professor Tajudeen Yusuf Completes Memorisation of Qur’an at 59

In an extraordinary display of dedication and perseverance, Professor Tajudeen Yusuf, a scholar of Risk Management and Insurance at the University of Lagos, has achieved the remarkable milestone of completing the memorisation of the Noble Qur’an at the age of 59.

The inspiring news was shared by Dr. AbdulHakeem AbdulLateef, a prominent Muslim preacher and founder of Khalwatu Tanzeel, a Lagos-based center for Arabic Studies and Qur’anic memorisation. In a heartfelt message on Facebook, Dr. AbdulLateef wrote:

“Join me in celebrating Professor Tajudeen Yusuf as he completed the memorization of the Glorious Qur’an. Congratulations, Yah Haafiz Al-Qur’an. Dear Prof and Haafiz, in spite of your busy schedule, you completed your memorization of the Glorious Qur’an. May Allah bless your knowledge and make it hujjah for you and not against you. We are proud of your resilience, steadfastness, and love for the Book of Allah. JazaakumuLlahu khairan.”

This achievement comes just days after Professor Yusuf’s son, Abdullah, graduated with first-class honours from the University of Lagos. With a stellar CGPA of 4.92, Abdullah emerged as the Best Graduating Student of both the Department of Islamic Studies and the Faculty of Arts. Like his father, Abdullah is also a Haafiz, having memorised the Qur’an through Khalwatu Tanzeel.

Professor Yusuf, who engaged a personal teacher for his memorisation journey, is a leading figure in Islamic finance as the President of the Institute of Islamic Finance Professionals (IIFP), Nigeria. At a recent Guild of Muslim Professionals (GMP) convention in Abeokuta, Ogun State, he lamented the limited engagement many Muslim professionals have with the Qur’an, urging them to carve out time for its recitation and memorisation.

The new Haafiz, who also serves as an Imam at the University of Lagos Central Mosque, exemplifies the saying that seeking knowledge is a lifelong obligation for every Muslim. His achievement is a testament to resilience, discipline, and unwavering commitment to the Book of Allah.
