UNILAG Muslim Alumni Set for Landmark 30th Pre-Ramadan Lecture
By Abdullahi Yusuf
The University of Lagos Muslim Alumni (UMA) is set to mark a significant milestone with the 30th edition of its annual Pre-Ramadan Lecture, scheduled to hold on Sunday, 23rd February 2025 at the J.F. Ajayi Auditorium, University of Lagos, starting at 10:00 AM.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the University Mosque Conference Center, the President of UMA, Dr. Mumini Alao, outlined the association’s preparations for what promises to be a landmark event in Islamic intellectual discourse in Nigeria.
With the theme “The Transformative Power of Ramadan,” this year’s lecture aims to explore the spiritual, moral, and social benefits of the holy month, encouraging Muslim faithful to maximize its blessings. The lead discussion, titled “Islam at the Intersection of Humanity and Religion,” will address the delicate balance between religious obligations and the broader societal context in which Muslims live.
A second topic, “Shari’ah in South West Nigeria,” will examine the recent controversy surrounding the establishment of a Shari’ah Arbitration Panel in Ekiti State. The discussion will delve into the historical and constitutional basis for Shari’ah-based dispute resolution mechanisms, particularly in a pluralistic society like Nigeria.
To provide expert insights, Professor Mashood Baderin of the University of London, a distinguished scholar in Islamic Law and International Human Rights Law, will lead the discourse. Also scheduled to speak is Justice Abdur-Raheem Ahmad Sayi of the Shari’ah Court of Appeal, Ilorin, whose expertise in Islamic jurisprudence is expected to shed light on the legal intricacies of the Shari’ah debate in South West Nigeria.
The event will host an array of dignitaries, including: Special Guest of Honour: Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, Deputy Governor of Lagos State. Chairman of the Occasion: Senator Abdul’aziz Yari, former Governor of Zamfara State. Royal Father of the Day: Oba (Professor) Saka Adeola Matemilola, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom. Chief Host: Professor Folasade Ogunsola, FAS, Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos.
Marking its 30th anniversary, UMA has introduced special activities to commemorate this historic occasion. A Qur’an Recitation Challenge will be held for primary, secondary, and Arabic school children, with winners to be announced at the event. Additionally, past guest speakers who have significantly contributed to the lecture series will be honoured with special recognition awards. As part of UMA’s commitment to community welfare, a free medical outreach will be available for attendees before the programme officially begins.
Dr. Alao highlighted that over the last three decades, the UNILAG Muslim Alumni Pre-Ramadan Lecture has become a leading platform for intellectual and spiritual engagement, setting the stage for other Ramadan lectures across Lagos and South West Nigeria. He assured that this year’s edition would be insightful, engaging, and impactful as the Muslim community prepares for the sacred month of Ramadan.
“The 30th anniversary lecture promises to be one of the most rewarding editions yet,” he remarked. “We look forward to welcoming all attendees at the University of Lagos on 23rd February 2025.”
