UK Islamic Leader Discusses Identity and Faith in Upcoming MCB Leadership Race

Wajid Akhter, a candidate for the leadership of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), has shared his perspective on the importance of faith-based identity, particularly for Muslim children in the UK. Akhter, who is currently a National Council member of the MCB and a doctor from Essex, advocates for a shift in focus from national or ethnic identity to religious identity in shaping young Muslims’ sense of self.

In a recent interview, Akhter explained that he believes Muslim children should primarily identify as Muslims, rather than prioritizing their British or ethnic identity. He argues that an identity rooted in faith provides a solid foundation to approach life, while an emphasis on nationality or ethnicity may lead to a shallow sense of self.

Akter’s views have been met with mixed reactions. His positions have sparked discussion on the role of faith and nationality in personal identity, as well as the relationship between faith communities and broader society. Akhter has previously expressed that being a Muslim is an “act of revolutionary defiance” and criticized certain cultural practices, including New Year celebrations.

In response, Khalid Mahmood, the UK’s longest-serving Muslim MP, voiced concerns over Akhter’s remarks. Mahmood criticized what he described as an ideological flaw within the MCB and expressed doubts about the Council’s approach to engagement with the government.

Akhter, in his campaign for MCB leadership, has emphasized the importance of Muslim unity. He has expressed a desire to create a stronger, more politically organized Muslim community, suggesting that such unity could lead to greater influence and social change.

As the MCB prepares for its upcoming leadership election, discussions surrounding identity, faith, and the political future of Muslim communities in the UK continue to evolve.
