The Slander of Aisha (r.a): Golden Words of Allah Ep79
“Indeed, those who came with the slander are a group among you. Do not think it bad for you; rather, it is good for you. For every person among them is what [punishment] he has earned of sin, and the one who took upon himself the greater share of it for him is a tremendous punishment.” (Surah An-Nur, 24:11)

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. All perfect praise is due to Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, the Lord of the Worlds. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah, and Muhammad (pbuh), is His slave and final Messenger.
This episode of the Golden words of Allah talks about the incident of the slander against Aisha bint Abi Bakr (ra) which was a defining moment in which Allah the most merciful intervened to legislate ethics of speech for all generations. The incident occurred during the return journey from the expedition of Banu Mustaliq. Aisha (ra), who accompanied the Prophet (pbuh), left the camp briefly and returned to find the caravan had moved on, assuming she was already in her howdah. She remained behind until Safwan ibn al-Mu‘attal (ra), who had been traveling behind the army, found her and escorted her back to Madinah in broad daylight.
What should have been a simple explanation became an opportunity for malicious talk. Rumors spread quietly, carried by those who spoke without knowledge and others who repeated without restraint.
Aisha (ra) later narrated that she fell ill upon returning to Madinah and remained unaware of the rumors until much later. When she learned of them, the pain was not only personal but profound. She sought permission to stay with her parents, where she wept for days, saying she believed her tears would never end.
During this period, the Prophet (pbuh) himself received no revelation. He consulted companions, listened carefully, and maintained restraint. The matter was too serious for assumption, and Allah delayed revelation to expose how the community handled unverified speech.
Importantly, the Prophet (pbuh) never accused Aisha (ra), When he eventually spoke to Aisha (ra) directly, he said, in meaning: “If you are innocent, Allah will declare your innocence. If you have committed a sin, then seek Allah’s forgiveness.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Then Allah revealed the truth. Surah An-Nur descended with decisive language. Allah declared that the slander was false and rebuked those who entertained it:
“Why did the believing men and believing women, when you heard it, not think good of one another and say: ‘This is an obvious lie’?”(24:12)
“Why did they [who slandered] not produce for it four witnesses? And when they do not produce the witnesses, then it is they, in the sight of Allah , who are the liars.” (24:13)
“When you received it with your tongues and said with your mouths that of which you had no knowledge, and you thought it insignificant, while it was in the sight of Allah tremendous.”(24:15)
“Allah warns you never to repeat the like of it, if you are believers.” (24:17)
The revelation of Surah An-Nur (24:11–26) came while the Prophet (pbuh) was sitting with Aisha (ra) and her parents. Aisha (ra) narrates that the physical weight of revelation overtook him, a known sign when Qur’an descended. When it ended, the first words he spoke were not his own, but Allah’s.
He smiled and said: “Rejoice, O Aisha. Allah has revealed your innocence.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
The outcome of the incident elevated Aisha (ra) beyond any human defense. Her innocence was affirmed by revelation recited until the Day of Judgment. Also, it is noted that no other woman was honoured in such way in history.
