The Art of Gratitude Kicks-off in Abuja

The highly anticipated Islamic Art exhibition titled The Art of Appreciation II: Alhamdulillah G’oma by renowned artist Ridwan ADK-Osinowo opens its doors tomorrow, Sunday, 6th October 2024, at the Orisun Art Gallery, Tropic Galleria, Abuja. The exhibition will run for a week, closing on Sunday, 13th October 2024, offering an immersive journey through Islamic spirituality and art.

The exhibition, rooted in the profound Islamic expression Alhamdulillah (praise be to Allah), seeks to inspire reflection and gratitude among its viewers. Through a dynamic collection of works, Ridwan ADK-Osinowo emphasizes the act of appreciation as a key to a fulfilling life, aligning with the belief that recognizing Allah’s blessings is integral to peace and contentment.

As noted in the exhibition’s foreword by Abdulfattah Adeyemi, Fellow of the Society of Nigerian Artists, Ridwan ADK-Osinowo is “not just an artist; he is a versatile creator whose passion for exploration knows no bounds.” His ability to manipulate a variety of materials—fiberglass, aluminium, acrylic, and wood—“sets him apart as a true innovator in Arabic calligraphy.” Adeyemi highlights how Ridwan’s works present a “visual tafseer of Allah’s promise in the Qur’an that if we are grateful, He will surely increase us in favour.” This theme of gratitude is central to the exhibition, reminding viewers of the beauty and blessings in their lives.

Drawing from his artist’s statement, Ridwan explores the divine obligation of expressing gratitude to Allah for life, sustenance, and guidance. He ties this sentiment to the Islamic practice of praising Allah after obligatory prayers, specifically highlighting the significance of Alhamdulillah ten times, as reflected in the theme’s incorporation of the Hausa word “Goma,” meaning ten. His works will showcase a blend of Arabic calligraphy, paintings, and mixed media on mediums such as aluminium composite panels, perspex, HDF board, and oil on canvas.

Speaking on his inspiration, Ridwan ADK-Osinowo shared, “Alhamdulillah is not merely a phrase; it is an art in itself—an expression of divine appreciation. Through this exhibition, I hope to remind the Muslim world and art lovers of the immense value of praise and its ability to unlock blessings from the Almighty.”

The grand opening will take place at 2:00 pm on Sunday, with a distinguished line-up of guests set to grace the occasion. Senator Mohammed Sanusi Daggash, an accomplished Nigerian, chairs the occasion. Sheikh Abdullahi Bala-Lau, the National Chairman of JIBWIS, speaks on the theme; Mallam Mustapha Bintube, the Board Chair of JAIZ Bank Plc, is the Guest of Honour and the Hon. Minister of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, Hajiya Hanatu Musa Musawa, comes as a Special Guest. Similarly the Malaysia Ambassador, Turkiye Ambassador , Director General of National Gallery of Art , Malam Ahmed Bashir Sodangi and Alh. AbdurRafiu Ebiti Chairman CEO Istabarakim Nigeria Limited and Deputy President General Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria MUSWEN, will be in attendance.

In addition to the art exhibition, the week-long event will host two sessions designed to foster intellectual discussions at the intersection of art, faith, and finance. On Wednesday, 9th October, Corporate Hour with Halal Executives will explore “Islamic Finance & Capital Market: A Potential Tool for Economic Rebirth in Developing Nations,” with Mallam Attahiru Muhammed Maccido, Managing Director of One17 Capital Limited, delivering the keynote.

On Thursday, 10th October, the Time Out with Imams and Clerics will feature a presentation by the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Hidayet Bayraktar, who will speak on “Islamic Art: A Potential Tool for Dawah, Turkish Model,” providing insights into how Islamic art can further religious outreach and cultural dialogue. It also features an Award ceremony in honour of Hon. Jaafaru Yakubu, Honourable Member, House of Representative, Federal Republic of Nigeria, National Assembly Complex, Three Arms Zone, Abuja.

The Art of Appreciation II: Alhamdulillah G’omaoffers a rich, multifaceted cultural experience, blending artistic expression with thoughtful discourse on the deeper meanings of gratitude, finance, and faith. The exhibition invites art lovers, cultural enthusiasts, and scholars alike to partake in a week of celebration, reflection, and learning.
