Story of the Cow – Golden Words of Allah (episode 42)

“And [recall] when Moses said to his people, ‘Indeed, Allah commands you to slaughter a cow.’ They said, ‘Do you take us in ridicule?’ He said, ‘I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant.’” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:67)

Introduction

The story of the cow in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:67-73) is a significant narrative that highlights themes of obedience, faith, and divine wisdom. This account, which gives the surah its name, revolves around an incident involving the Israelites and their reluctance to follow Allah’s command without hesitation. It serves as a lesson on sincerity in worship, submission to divine instructions, and the dangers of excessive questioning in religious matters.

1. The Command to Sacrifice a Cow
Allah commanded  the Israelites, through Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him), to sacrifice a cow. However, instead of obeying immediately, they responded with skepticism and delay.

Quranic Verse: “And [recall] when Moses said to his people, ‘Indeed, Allah commands you to slaughter a cow.’ They said, ‘Do you take us in ridicule?’ He said, ‘I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant.’”(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:67)

Instead of submitting to the command, they began to question Prophet Musa repeatedly, seeking unnecessary details about the cow’s characteristics.

2. Prolonged Inquiry and Delays
Rather than following the command promptly, the Israelites asked about the type, color, and age of the cow. Allah provided answers but made the command increasingly specific, making it harder for them to comply.

Age: The cow should neither be too old nor too young but in between (2:68). Color: The cow should be bright yellow, pleasing to look at (2:69).
Purpose: It should be one that had never been used for plowing or watering the fields (2:71).

Each additional question narrowed their choices, making their task more difficult, which teaches an important lesson: excessive questioning in matters of faith can lead to unnecessary hardship.

3. The Murder and the Miracle
The backdrop of this command was a murder case among the Israelites. A man had been killed, and his murderer was unknown. Allah instructed them to strike the body with a piece of the sacrificed cow, and miraculously, the dead man was revived to identify his killer.

Quranic Verse: “So We said, ‘Strike the slain man with part of it.’ Thus does Allah bring the dead to life, and He shows you His signs that you might reason.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:73)

This event not only solved the murder mystery but also demonstrated Allah’s power to resurrect the dead, reinforcing the belief in the afterlife.
