Saudi Students Express Joy Over National Dress Code

Male students in public and private high schools across Saudi Arabia have shown full abidance by a royal directive making the Saudi national dress obligatory for them in their institutions, Saudi media reported.
Since Sunday morning, the decision has come into effect. Schools in different parts of the kingdom have since seen the arrival of male students wearing the national costume. The students sounded elated about the decision.
“Wearing the national dress reflects the spirit of belonging to the homeland, religion and leadership,” Abdulaziz Al Sultan, a student at a high school in Riyadh, told Al Ekhbariya television.
He added that the decision is in line with Saudi society’s values and traditions, and enhances students’ pride in their national identity.
His colleague Rayan Al Otaibi said he used to wear the national dress even before the decision, which made him feel that it was normal and completely compatible with his daily life.
Earlier this week, the Saudi Ministry of Education mandated that all male secondary school students, both public and private, wear the national attire.
The decision aligns with directives from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to emphasize educational values and national identity, the Saudi Press Agency SPA reported.
Saudi students are required to wear the thobe (a male garment) and ghutra or shemagh (headgear), while non-Saudi students will wear the thobe. Students attending foreign schools are excluded from the decision.
In recent years, Saudi Arabia has placed increasing emphasis on promoting national identity and local culture.
Since 2022, February 22 has been designated as Saudi Arabia’s Founding Day and an official holiday ordered by King Salman bin Abdul Aziz. The day commemorates the establishment of the first Saudi state in 1727 by Imam Mohammad bin Saud, aiming to forge a stronger connection between present-day Saudis and their national heritage.
Last year, official directives were issued specifying the formal use of the bisht, a traditional male cloak, for certain categories of individuals and state officials at workplaces and formal events.
