Ogun Muslim Council Hails Govt Over Mosque Demolition Reversal
Council urges regularisation of mosque documents, eyes hosting 42nd National Qur’an Recitation Competition in 2027

The Ogun State Muslim Council (OMC) has expressed appreciation to the state government for reversing the planned demolition of the Ibara Housing Estate Central Mosque in Abeokuta, describing the decision as a relief and a mark of responsiveness to public concern.
PEACE Magazine learned that the State Planning and Development Permit Authority had earlier issued a seven-day quit notice to the mosque authorities, citing structural and documentation issues, a development that had sparked widespread concern among Muslims within and beyond the state.
In a communiqué issued after its general meeting held on Sunday, November 9, 2025, and signed by its Secretary-General, Asiwaju Kamal’deen Akintunde (Esq.), the Council lauded the government’s intervention and urged the mosque committee to regularise its title documents to secure permanent approval and forestall future disputes.
The Council, while reviewing activities across its organs, also approved a proposal from the Ogun Standing Committee on Musabaqah (OSCOM) to mobilise support and lobby stakeholders for Ogun State to host the 42nd National Qur’anic Recitation Competition in 2027 — an event it described as “a unifying and spiritually uplifting gathering for the Ummah.”
In the same vein, OMC announced plans to partner with the Islamic Medical Association of Nigeria (IMAN) to conduct free medical outreach programmes across the state, focusing on early detection, preventive healthcare, and community wellness.
The Council further ratified the nomination of two female scholars, Adegboye Rahmat Adedayo of Olabisi Onabanjo University and Egunsola Hafsah Omolola of Yakubu Gowon University, as beneficiaries of the Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar Female Medical Scholarship facilitated by MUSWEN, in recognition of their academic excellence and commitment to service.
Reaffirming its commitment to the growth of Islamic education and community development, the OMC maintained that its officers would continue to represent the state effectively in the Central Working and General Purpose Committees of MUSWEN to ensure Ogun’s active participation in regional Islamic affairs.
