MUSWEN Hosts 9th General Assembly, Advocates for Poverty Eradication and National Development

The Muslim Ummah of Southwest Nigeria (MUSWEN) convened its 9th General Assembly and Convention at the Professor Musa Oladipupo Centre, University of Ibadan. The event, which brought together dignitaries, stakeholders, and the Muslim community, was a platform to discuss achievements, future plans, and pressing societal issues.
In his welcome address, the President of MUSWEN, Alhaji Rasak Oladejo, highlighted the organization’s milestones since the last General Assembly. Among these were the launch of the ₦10 billion MUSWEN Endowment Fund, the revival of the Sultan Abubakar Female Medical Students Scholarship, youth skills acquisition programs, and empowerment initiatives for small businesses. Dr. Oladejo also noted MUSWEN’s participation in the 48th Hajj Symposium in Saudi Arabia and their contributions to the Borno State flood relief fund and palliative distributions to the needy.
He further urged the government to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians by channeling the gains from subsidy removal into critical areas such as infrastructure development, electricity, mass food production, and income-generating projects. Alh. Oladejo expressed gratitude to the chairmen and members of state councils, various committees, and the planning committee for their roles in organizing the assembly.
The newly elected Board of Trustees, chair by Dr. Wale Babalakin SAN, OFR, was introduced, with Dr. Babalakin delivering the opening remarks.
In a paper presentation titled “Islamic Instruments for the Total Eradication of Poverty in Society,” Professor Wole Abass emphasized Zakat as a powerful Islamic tool for addressing poverty. He advocated for its widespread implementation to uplift the less privileged.
Scholarships were awarded by His Eminence, Dr. Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar CFR, Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA). Scholarships were awarded to 12 female Muslim students—two from each Southwestern state—with each recipient receiving ₦500,000 and a laptop. The Sultan reiterated the importance of encouraging Muslim women to pursue medical education, ensuring that Muslim women are cared for by female doctors. He noted that the Sultan Abubakar Female Students Scholarship, initiated in 2008, has entered its third stream.
Additionally, the Sultan presented an award to Alhaja Sekinat Adejola for her outstanding contributions to the Muslim Ummah.
In his remarks, the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Barrister Abdulraheem Adebayo, commended MUSWEN for its dedication to advancing the welfare of the Muslim community and promoting national development.
The assembly reaffirmed MUSWEN’s commitment to fostering unity, development, and empowerment within the Muslim community and beyond.
The convention concluded with a vote of thanks by Alhaji Thabit Wale Sonaike, who expressed gratitude to all attendees and contributors.
